So I'm kicking myself why I didn't talk about Boxing Day for last week's trivia contest's write-up. Boxing Day, as we all know, is a Canadian holiday where it's legal to do pretty much anything you want. My favourite used to be to prank-call China (all 1,321,851,888 of them) and ask them if their refrigerator was running. Hilarious. And no chance of arrest!! Tonight 12 teams competed. Well; 11 teams competed. I'm pretty sure one guy was there just because his son was hosting the event. Thanks Dad!

Deciding to spice things up a bit tonight, I asked the question 'How do you make Shepherd's Pie?'. The answer I was looking for was: * 1 1/2 lbs ground round beef * 1 onion chopped * 1-2 cups vegetables - chopped carrots, corn, peas * 1 1/2 - 2 lbs potatoes (3 big ones) * 8 tablespoons butter (1 stick) * 1/2 cup beef broth * 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce * Salt, pepper, other seasonings of choice 1 Peel and quarter potatoes, boil in salted water until tender (about 20 minutes). 2 While the potatoes are cooking, melt 4 Tablespoons butter (1/2 a stick) in large frying pan. 3 Sauté onions in butter until tender over medium heat (10 mins). If you are adding vegetables, add them according to cooking time. Put any carrots in with the onions. Add corn or peas either at the end of the cooking of the onions, or after the meat has initially cooked. 4 Add ground beef and sauté until no longer pink. Add salt and pepper. Add worcesterchire sauce. Add half a cup of beef broth and cook, uncovered, over low heat for 10 minutes, adding more beef broth as necessary to keep moist. 5 Mash potatoes in bowl with remainder of butter, season to taste. 6 Place beef and onions in baking dish. Distribute mashed potatoes on top. Rough up with a fork so that there are peaks that will brown nicely. You can use the fork to make some designs in the potatoes as well. 7 Cook in 400 degree oven until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Broil for last few minutes if necessary to brown. 8 Serves four. But people kept coming up with crazy answers (like 'Serves three' or 'Serves five'). NO ONE got the right answer. Am I being a stickler? Absolutely. That's what trivia is all about. Stickler-ness. In fairness though, I had one team put 'cook in a 204.4 degrees Celsius oven' which I gave them.

8 teams. That's 'ocho' in Spanish. I think that's the only non-swear word in Spanish I know. However, Peter (who hosted the night's festivities) probably knows a lot more.

2. Pol Pot Pie (720)
3. Wicked Awesome (690)
10 teams. One of things I hate is hearing voices in my head. Let me clarify; voices in my head with an accent. That always makes it difficult to actually obey them. I THOUGHT they said "no-trivia-get-on-a-greyhound" so I had the most excellent host Peter host trivia.

2. Hurricane Ditka (770)
5. Wicked Awesome (690)
12 teams. I felt incredibly hot tonight. Apparently too hot, since at one point I was (politely) asked to put my pants on. Sometimes I hate the man.

2. And Andy Rooney (630)
4. Hurricane Ditka (600)
We had 12 teams competing at one point tonight! Participation is slowly but surely picking up here.

16 teams! If only I was there. Phoning in a trivia contest has its disadvantages, but prison is prison. I could tell from the feedback the picture round did not go smoothly as I verbally described actors, but hey, you try and ask questions when Bob keeps flashing his shank, talking to God, and staring at you without blinking. Needless to say, Bob came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in our cell (barking noises count as answers in my book). I visited the teams below and re-asked the questions to get their answers as well.

2. And Andy Rooney (660)
5. Hurricane Ditka (660)
13 teams. The number of the beast. I did my hardest to get another team to join, just so the Devil didn't pop up during the final question and start spewing hellfire and damnation. No such luck.
11/07/20081. And Andy Rooney (760)
3. Wicked Awesome (680)
4. Hurricane Ditka (610)
9 teams. They had fun. I had funner. At some point I'm going to turn the mike on so the teams can hear me.

Happy Halloween! Tonight I tried something different; I read the answer and had the teams give me the question. Bad Idea. Who knew you could ask multiple questions to get one answer? I then tried saying "Give me the RIGHT question for this answer". Still chaos. What could be harder than giving me the RIGHT question to "1933"? Maybe I should just stick with regular hosting. 8 teams played throughout the night, with 6 finishing.

I started out hosting this game in German, then realized in during Round 2 I couldn't speak German. So I switched to Spanish. Same thing. I eventually settled on Latin and things went smoothly from there. Semper Ubi Sub Ubi.
10/10/20083. Hurricane Ditka (560)
Oh what a night! Record breaking 13 teams playing at one point. This night is getting busier and busier. Team Hurricane Ditka was pleased as punch to be featured as NTA's featured team of the week. And was gracious through host JD's massive cock -up. Everybody loves Canada!
10/04/2008 Eight teams entered, one team left. Well, actually, all eight teams left, but one team got $30, another team got $20, and a 3rd team was supposed to get $10 but I pocketed it and left before the other team realized I had gone. I'll have to wear a disguise next week.
